Bring Home a Real American Hero

November 30th, 2011

After 40 years of fighting the bad guys, Hasbro’s very own American hero, G.I. Joe, is finally coming home – in the form of his very first full-length CGI feature film on DVD.

In “G.I. Joe: Valor Vs. Venom,” brought to you by Paramount Home Entertainment and Hasbro, the popular character sets out to protect the world from complete destruction. Once again he faces off against the evil Cobra, who has unleashed an army of unstoppable soldiers with fierce battle skills.

The leader of this formidable army is none other than the infamous Venomous Maximus, a creature made using the DNA of G.I. Joe’s own Commander, General “Hawk” Abernathy, as well as that of some of the most terrifying creatures in the universe. In order to defeat Cobra’s army and save his own Commander from this chilling fate, G.I. Joe needs to summon all of his scientific and heroic skills.

Marking the 40th anniversary of the G.I. Joe character, the DVD features tons of special features for his loyal fans, including a trading card game guide, a CD-ROM game and a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the movie’s creation.

You can also scroll through character profiles, groove to a Valor vs. Venom music video and check out a drawing board-to-film comparison.

If you’re doing the math, G.I. Joe debuted in 1964 as an 11 1/2- inch doll for boys that had 21 moving parts. After the movie “The Story of G.I. Joe” was released, he became the world’s first “action figure.”

While the character’s challenges most often dealt with the evil Cobra Commander, G.I. Joe was also called upon in 1992 to help the Drug Elimination Force combat the growing drug problem. In-school programs were launched using the character to teach kids about the dangers of drug use.

Filled with history, as well as important lessons for kids of all ages, G.I. Joe has continued to reinvent and modernize himself throughout the years, without losing sight of his main mission – to protect the world from evil.

Now you can take home this timeless character in “G.I. Joe: Valor vs. Venom” to share with future fans of the ever-evolving G.I. Joe, who is still up for the challenge of educating the young and old.

In stores now, “G.I. Joe: Valor vs. Venom” is rated PG and has a retail price of around $20. - NU

An Introduction To Anonymous Surfing

November 30th, 2011

Privacy is a right most people practice everyday. Its why bathrooms have doors and locks, cubicles at the library are constructed to block out the glances of other patrons, voting laws that allow you to cast a ballot anonymously exist, and commuters dont sit on your lap in the subway (unless its really crowded, of course!) So its no surprise that people expect a certain amount of privacy when surfing the Internet. In fact, many people think their online activities are entirely anonymous after all, no one can see you in the World Wide Web, right?

Unfortunately, this is not the case. Internet browsing is not necessarily anonymous, even though it may seem to be. First of all, your ISP (Internet Service Provider) has the ability to log all the sites your IP (Internet Protocol) address visits. Your IP address is how your computer is identified every time you log on to the Internet. Secondly, the actual websites you visit can easily track your IP address and log it for future reference. Your IP address doesnt specify your actual name, but its not difficult for the owner of a particular website to link your IP address to your ISP.

Its safe to assume most Internet surfers value anonymity online because that is what makes the Internet a unique experience. For the first time in history, people from around the world with access to a computer have been able to connect to each other, communicate, and share information without having to disclose personal information. On the Internet your alias is your identity. It is this opportunity to remain anonymous that has allowed many people to practice freedom of speech and use the Internet as a tool of expression.

If used for legitimate activities, the Internet creates a forum in which the average person can correspond with other people who share similar interests and discuss issues that might be cause for embarrassment, reprimand, or persecution in other circles. For instance, using a pseudonym allows the individual to be creative, lets concerned citizens voice discontent over corporate practices, and makes it possible for mistreated minorities to express their feelings and discuss topics related to their experience without fear of reprisal. As a source of information, the Internet is also a good place to research sensitive topics, such as hair loss, without having to reveal your identity. Its easy to see why people might want to protect their anonymity in the virtual world.

You might want to remain anonymous online for other reasons as well. Some people require protection from the government, employers, or corporations. Businesses use anonymous surfing to research their competition incognito, while lawyers use it to visit websites that will help him/her make a strong case for a client without disclosing their conduct to the party under scrutiny, which could compromise a case. The average person wants to surf anonymously just to avoid the prying eyes of nosy websites and aggressive marketing companies.

So how do you surf anonymously? The only way to keep your browsing habits under lock and key is to hide your IP address using anonymous web browsing technology. Anonymous web browsing entails the use of a proxy server, which is placed between you and the website you are visiting. Essentially, your web browser talks to the proxy server (instead of directly to the website) and the proxy server then talks to the website, shielding your IP address from view. The website only sees the proxy server. Just make sure you choose a proxy server you trust because the proxy server will know your IP address.

Although all methods of anonymous surfing involve the use of a proxy server, there are several ways to go about it. The first method works through another website. You simply visit the website of the proxy server and then type the URL of the site you want to browse. Youll then be taken to the website through the proxy server.

Another method requires that you download a client application. This is a program that handles everything, regarding the proxy server, on your behalf so you dont have to worry about anything except browsing.

An anonymous web proxy service is another way to remain anonymous online. With this method you have to configure your browser to point to an anonymous web proxy, but once this has been accomplished your browsing experience should be relatively hassle-free. These services are public and exist for the sole purpose of anonymous surfing by proxy.

You can also set up your web browser to surf through your choice of an anonymous server the difference here is that an anonymous server does not advertise as a web proxy service. Instead, you can find lists of these servers published on the Internet. Another difference: you might not know who is running the service, and as a result, the server could potentially record your web traffic.

If you choose to employ a web proxy service, here are some things to look out for:

1. A reputable service should set up a TLS or SSL tunnel for you. This means network sniffers wont be able to eavesdrop on your surfing habits.

2. Choose a service that supports the protocols you want to use. Some services offer FTP, while others only support HTTP. Some also offer HTTPS, but not all.

3. A good proxy service should do more than just hide your IP address. It should also remove traffic such as cookies, scripts, pop-ups, banners, and referrer information. Just make sure you have the option to configure these elements so that websites for which you need to use cookies and pop-ups wont be rendered unusable.

No matter how you choose to surf the web anonymously, youll surely rest easy knowing that your privacy isnt being compromised every time you log on.

Ten Tips To Jump Start Your Business Plan

November 29th, 2011

1) Rome Wasn’t Planned, Funded, and Built in One Day

The process of putting together a coherent business plan will probably take longer that you estimate (an incoherent business plan on the other hand can take as little as 20 minutes). Along the way you will probably stop and say, “you know, we haven’t really thought our strategies out very well, have we?” or “we don’t really know our competition as well as we thought we did,” and you will take the time to hone your strategies and get up to speed on the competition before you finish the plan and present it.

2) Smaller Bites Are More Digestible

Start the plan with an outline. By breaking the large task down into smaller components, the task will not seem as daunting. A business plan can be viewed simply as the answers to a series of questions.

3) Style Points Count, Too.

The visual aspects of the document should not be overlooked. Color charts, tables of data to break up the text, paragraph headings, varying the typestyles–all of these contribute to making the plan easier to read, and to more clearly explain the business opportunity.

4) To Write A Plan, Read A Plan.

People who write novels are generally those who have read many, many, stories. They learn their craft by studying the works of their favorite authors. You need to do the same thing. Look at examples of business plans to get in your mind the writing style, the sequence in which the ideas are presented, and the parts to a plan. Sample plans are available on the Internet at sites devoted
to assisting entrepreneurs.

5) Pick A Section, Any Section

If you have never written a business plan before, you may have difficulty getting the project started. It will seem as though you have an awful lot of blank pages staring back at you. To get the plan moving, start with the section that is easiest for you, or of most interest.

6) Spend Quality Time With Your Plan.

People often underestimate the effort and energy it takes to write a business plan. They try to write it at night or when everything else at work is finished, in other words, when they are mentally and sometimes physically exhausted. A better approach is to write the plan when you have energy available to put into it: go in early and think and write for an hour before the phones start ringing.

7) First Drafts Are Always A Laugh.

The first draft of your plan will undoubtedly resemble incoherent ramblings–jumbled stream-of-semi-consciousness ideas that look nothing like what you had hoped it would. Don’t be disappointed or frustrated.
8) You Deserve A Break Today.

Put the draft away for a few days, come back to it fresh, and begin revising and rewriting. Magically, after several more revisions, the ideas will all come together and the language of the plan will flow.

9) The Plan Is Your Baby–It Needs To Look Like You.

The business plan should reflect the personality of your management team, and the type of company you want to create. As the reader goes through it, he/she should get to know the people involved in the company, their vision, their objectives, and their enthusiasm for the company and the industry. Tell the story of your company in your own voice. A plan for a music production company would look much different than a plan for a medical device manufacturer.

10) Not Everyone Has A Flair For Fiction.

Business plans are essentially works of fiction–documents that talk about what you imagine, plan and hope may occur in the future, not what has already occurred. This type of writing is difficult for everyone. You’ve heard of “writer’s block”. The problems you are having keeping the words flowing are precisely the ones faced by the great writers, except many of them have to keep going because the publisher has given them a unreachable deadline and they’ve already spent their advance, but you of course, having read tip #1 Rome Wasn’t Planned, Funded, and Built in One Day have allowed plenty of time to finish the business plan–so there’s no reason to feel pressured. Right?

Car Hire In Berlin For World Cup 2006

November 29th, 2011

The World Cup in Germany this summer is se tot be not only the biggest sporting event of the decade but also the biggest tourist draw in Europe this year. Berlin will be the centrepiece for this celebration of the beautiful game hosting the final and, as capital of Germany, the main host for the festivities.

Although the influx of tourists is set to be huge, Berlin is well geared up for the opening of the tournament. As one of Europes most popular city break destinations and the host for major annual events such as the Love Parade, Berlin is well used to throwing a party. Accommodation however will be thin on the ground in Berlin and anyone looking for a late deal will be struggling to find anything within the parameters of Berlin itself but some of the major hotel booking (http://www.superbreak.com ) resellers may have some late availability on the outskirts of the city or surrounding towns.

For true football fans getting around Germany during the World Cup might be a troublesome affair. Although Germany has one of the most efficient public transport systems in the world, it is also the largest country in Europe and with the 12 host cities spread throughout the land mass, the transport system is set to be bursting at the seams. Renting a car might be the best option for those looking to explore further than Berlin or to use the capital as a base for following their teams fortunes in the tournament. Most of the major car rental (http://www.easycar.com/aspx/car-hire/location/Berlin.aspx/EN ) firms have a presence in the city and the road network in the city itself and throughout the host cities makes car hire in Berlin and for World cup 2006 a valid option.

Berlin has garnered a reputation as a cultural and party capital since reunification in 1990. A steady influx of short break tourists have ensured that the city has the facilities and tourist infrastructure that one would expect of a major European city and Berlin certainly does not disappoint. There are some interesting towns surrounding the capital and for those exploring the region by car the contrast between east and west although eroded over the last 16 years is still just visible.

Habits You Need to Stop For Better Skincare

November 29th, 2011

Most people have the idea that having clear and healthy skin costs a fortune. But, this is a misleading concept used for marketing skin care products and treatments. You may use the most expensive skin care products money can buy, but these can’t guarantee a blemish-free and clear complexion. Why?? Because skincare does not start with the products you use or the skin treatments you undergo. Skin care depends on your habits and their effects on your skin. Below are some habits you can do without to achieve better skin:

Why Do We Age? | 7 Theories of Aging

November 29th, 2011

Why do we age? Currently, there are seven theories on the aging process. Actually, we do not have a good scientific explanation for aging. We just know that our bodies were designed to grow old. There are seven major theories about why we age. All of them have some credibility.

The first is that our genes program ourselves to divide a certain number of times and once this division has reached the maximum number our bodies will begin to fail. This is the Telomar Theory. These are genetic elements that are controlling the number of allowable cell divisions.
The second is the general degradation of the neuroendocrine system. The neurological and hormonal systems that regulate the body finally wear out and make us susceptible to a host of diseases.
The third is that our body builds up so many toxins and other waste products that our systems begin to shut down. This toxic waste build up can even affect the structure of our genes.
The fourth is the wear and tear theory that living itself causes our joints and body parts to wear out.
The fifth theory is the free radical damage of aging. The body builds up free radical oxidants that damage our organs and our DNA causing us to age quickly.
The sixth theory is the glucose toxicity theory, which also has to do with waste build up, and the poor utilization and control of glucose within our physiological system.
The seventh theory of aging derives from the law of entropy that means that in the universal there is continual movement from order to disorder and that in our bodies this movement is marked by aging.
Why Do We Age? | What Gets Old
So what part of our body ages? Aging happens in particulars, our arteries get clogged, our joints flare up with arthritis, our parts start to slow down and wear out, and we do not heal as quickly as we used to.
Scientists have found that we all have certain genes in our make up that we are born with and today we cannot change, yet, but how we age is primarily up to us. Our environment, our tendencies, our activities, and our interactions are what matters. As a matter of fact, our inherited genetics account for less than 30% of all aging effects and the importance of genetic inheritance matters less and less as we age. By the age of 80, behavioral choices account almost entirely for your overall health and longevity.
Some people are biologically predisposed to early onset of arterial aging. They have inherited a tendency toward high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and weight gaining. While other people are culturally predisposed to the disease because they are far more likely to develop bad eating habits, high in saturated fat, that will accelerate the aging process within the artery. Many say you are as old as your arteries. When your arteries become clogged, they diminish the amount of oxygen and nutrients that can get to your cells. When this happens, our entire body ages more quickly. Cardiovascular disease is the leading killer of adult Americans that claim 40% of us and seriously effecting more than half of us.
Genetic controls in your cells protect your cells from becoming cancerous. When these cellular controls slip you have total body wide systems that help control any pre-cancerous cells that develop. This is your immune system. Many types of arthritis are good examples of a break down in the immune system.
How you react to environment biologically, psychologically, and socially all have to do with how young you stay. Living and working in a hazardous environment obviously has a negative effect upon your health. While maintaining increased mental activity, becoming a life long learner, and maintaining close personal relationships with a few people and having several other good friends that are not so close but where you can laugh, have fun and enjoy life. Developing some passionate life producing interests keeps one young.
Why Do We Age? | Men and Women
Men reach their peak of performance curve in their late twenties and women in their mid thirties. Our bodies are fully matured, we are strongest and at our most mentally acute then. Somewhere between 28 and 36 years of age most people reach a turning point, a transition from growing into an aging process. Most people experience significant backaches between the age of 28 and 36 in my practice. When they reach that turning point and their ability to compensate, musculoskeletal and physiologically it starts to turn. This can be quite momentous event for men and women, for the first time in their life that they are really suffering.
Statistically, our physiological function and cognitive ability performance declines as we age. Each biological function decreases 3% to 6% per decade after age 35. But the good news is certain functions such as mental acuity and IQ have some people show almost no decline or even improve as they progress from 35 to 75 years old.
You may wish to take the online questionnaire at http://www.realage.com to determine what your real age is according to their approach. The resulting age you will get there is based on epidemiological research.

Chess Over the Years

November 28th, 2011

Over the years, chess spread throughout the world and enjoyed massive waves of popularity. Undoubtedly, reality is reflected in the idea that chess originated either as an aid or substitute for warfare. This stemmed from the notion that chess was invented as a war game and so, that is the manner in which it should executed. In fact in order to be knighted, it helped if you played a good game of chess.

And finally, a mention should be made of pawns; those so adequately named pieces which are even denied the status of chess ‘men’. Pawns were sacrificial pieces.

While chess might have originated as a war game, it was seen as a game of nobility and education in Europe in the 1500s. It can be seen that from actions in Europe around the year 1500 that chess had become strongly ingrained in western society. Within European Aristocracy, the concept behind chess became a royal court rather than a battlefield. However, the game’s popularity was helped by its social cache: a chess set was often associated with wealth, knowledge, and power. As a result it became fashionable for aristocrats to have live-in chess masters. In fact during difficult times in Protestant Europe there were massive attacks on “ungodly pursuits,” but chess was often defended while other pastimes were denied.

As a result chess has long been considered the ultimate test of intellectual activity. Some feel that because of its difficulty and boorishness, chess diminished in its traditional appeal. However, most will agree that the chess community has traditionally been more enlightened than the larger society.

Mass production of chess sets helped introduce chess to the lower class. The low cost to produce the Staunton set allowed the masses to purchase sets and helped to again popularize the game of chess. But chess is more than just a game of skill. Chess stood a turn in education as teachers noted that students’ behavior improved upon learning chess. How far beyond chess such aptitude can be expanded is the next big question.

One that is still argued today. Playing chess by computer began in the early 1950s, nearly as soon as computers became available. The rules of play early intrigued computer scientists-MIT wrote the first chess program in 1957. Some programmers believe that work on computer chess led to important software techniques still in use today. The worldwide fascination for chess has been astonishing. It has been said that there is more literature devoted to chess than for all other games combined. Today, chess is played world wide with international appeal.

Soccer – The World’s Most Popular Sport

November 28th, 2011

Soccer is perhaps the world’s favorite spectator sport, popularly known as “Football” in Britain and other European countries. This game can be as frustrating as golf, as physical as football and hockey, as erratic as baseball, and as exciting as basketball. No simple word can describe the popularity of the game, with a global television audience of 49 billion people for the 2002 World Cup alone. The game is exciting and highly addictive to watch and play.

Professional game rules require 11 players per team, 10 playing the field and one goalkeeper. With the use of a round ball, the matched is player with the two teams wearing shirts of different colors with distinctive soccer patches. The game is divided into two sets, each for 45 minutes long with the referee adding “extra time” based on time being wasted or play being stopped during the original 45 minutes. Usually, the extra time will be about one-to-three minutes.

A maximum of three substitutes may be used in any match played in an official competition organized under the auspices of the World Governing body Federation International Football Association (FIFA), the confederations or the national associations. However, in other competitions the rules must state how many substitutes may be nominated, from three up to a maximum of seven.

The decision regarding a match ending with a tie score usually depends on the actual type of game being player. There are times when the just simply ends in a tie score after the regular 90 minutes game plus any added time. On the other hand, a game ending with a tie score may lead into an overtime with an allotted time of extra play leading to penalty kicks, this usually occurs during a deciding game of a tournament. Each team is given five attempts to score on the opposing goalkeeper, the team with the highest score wins the game.

During a game, players are only allowed to wear soccer equipment and are prohibited to wear anything that may harm him as well as the other. This includes any kind of jewelry and other accessories. The basic soccer equipment of a player include a jersey or shirt with their distinctive soccer patches; shorts, if thermal under shorts are worn, it has to be the same main color as the shorts; stockings; and footwear, soccer shoes, boots, cleats.

There are instances that players may use extra equipments such as shin guards and headgears. The shin guards protect the leg below the knee and are completely covered by the stockings. These are either made of rubber, plastic, or similar substances. While the head gear are available to protect younger players when heading the ball.

For goalkeepers, they must wear a color that separates him from the other goalkeeper, players, the referee and the assistant referees.

There are four important details that one should know about the game before he is ready to play soccer. The first is that only the goalkeeper is allowed to use his hands, and this is only within the confines of the marked-off area surrounding the goal. When a player uses their hands on a ball, the opposing team gets a free kick from the spot of the violation.

The second vital information that you should remember about the game is that players are generally penalized for rough or unfair play with the use of cards. A yellow card is considered a stern warning, while a red card signifies a serious violation. Once a player receives a red card it means that he had been ejected from the game and cannot be replaced and that leaves the player’s team with less players. Meanwhile receiving two yellow cards will equal to a red card, meaning the player will receive the same penalty.

Personal Alchemy: Three Steps To Positive Transformation

November 28th, 2011

Lately, I’ve become intrigued by the idea or process of “alchemy.” Funk & Wagnall tells me alchemy is a transformation, “a change in nature, form or quality.” So how to take charge of your own personal alchemy? For me, it’s about changes and transformations of mind, body and spirit. Therefore, in this article I’ve outlined three of my favorite ways to approach personal alchemy on the path to wholeness and health.

Step One: Dissect A Past Transformation:

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when thinking about the process of making a personal overhaul. Therefore, it’s important to break this idea down to its least common denominator. To begin, recall if you can a positive transformation you’ve made in your life. It could be as simple as beginning and staying with an exercise program. In your mind locate and focus on one specific personal transformation.

Next, break down your transformation into its components: mind, body and spirit. I tend to look at everything in this tri-fold sense. I believe it is important to see the way a particular event contributes to the growth of each component. Right now, take a moment to observe the ways each of these components have contributed to your transformation:

Mind: Was your mind committed to making this positive change?

Body: What daily actions did it take to make this personal transformation effective and permanent?

Spirit: Was there a spiritual component at hand guiding you toward your positive goal?

Step Two: Begin The Uncovering Process:

Now that you’ve dissected a previous transformation, the uncovering process is simple. This process asks you to take some time with your journal and uncover a new personal transformation you would like to experience. With pen in hand, take time to make notes to yourself. Start small. What transformations would you like to make this year? Do some dreaming.

When you’ve finished, scan your list for one work?thwhile goal that is achievable. If you are unable to commit to one on your list, try these ideas to complete your uncovering:

According to Louise Hay in her book “You Can Heal Your Life” these components will help you live a holistic, healthy life. Perhaps one may inspire you toward a worthwhile goal.

Nurture The Body: Practice sound nutrition. Aim to make the best choices for your body and choose food and beverages that make you feel well. When appropriate supplement with herbs, vitamins and homeopathy.

Practice a sound exercise program. Find a form of exercise that is appealing to you and is one that you will do. Choose from: aerobic exercise, resistance training, tai chi, yoga or Pilates. When appropriate use body work such as massage or reiki.

Nurture The Mind: Add to your daily practice, visualization, guided imagery, affirmations or dream work. Spiritual meditation is also a great way to quiet the mind and allow time to tune in to the divine.

Nurture The Spirit: Find time to practice prayer work, meditation, forgiveness and unconditional love.

Step Three: Find Answers In The Silence: Then Take Your Goals One By One

We can’t possibly do everything. For as someone once told me “you have only, all the time there is.” With this in mind, I am brought back to my earliest ideas about personal alchemy. This involves one of the most difficult, yet necessary practices: finding time for silence. Finding time is the challenge I most often face when looking at my own personal growth and aiming to find ways to simplify and speed up the process.

Silence. Why does it work? From a physics or scientific standpoint, the electrons within the molecules of the body actually speed up when the body slows down. It seems difficult to understand at first, but the key is its reciprocal process. When the body slows down, the energy surrounding the body and passing through the body speeds up, literally directing the body: instructing it.

Grace, balance and growth are often natural extensions of this process. When you take some time to be still and offer your goal up to the universe, you can then become aware of the divine direction. To do this, try to first become aware of your surroundings. Then aim to find time each day to move toward your worthwhile goal. Keep it close to your heart. Know that there are many distractions in life, but if you take time to rest and stop for one moment, it could be the moment you will receive your greatest inspiration.

When in doubt, there’s always help! For a creative boost and further direction in your discovery process, please explore these sources:

Working Safely In Cold Weather

November 27th, 2011

Winter is the time of year that a lot of us look forward to but it can be a dangerous time to work if we dont take precautions. In the winter our bodies are working hard already just to keep us warm so any activity added to that increases the stress on our system.

We have all heard the stories of the guy who goes out to shovel his walk and has a heart attack. We want to give you some tips to help prevent an event like this.

First lets look at just a little basic physiology as temperatures drop your blood will be a little thicker as well, just like oil gets thicker almost like syrup. To counteract this make sure you stay plenty hydrated and consult your doctor to see if it would be appropriate to take an aspirin a day. That is what I do; the aspirin helps to thin your blood.

Make sure to layer your clothes. We want to be warm, but you need to be able to shed clothes as you warm up and as the day warms up. You must have enough warm clothes to protect you from the cold but you need to be able to make adjustments. Also remember that your extremities and your head are particularly vulnerable to the cold. Make sure that you have good insulated gloves and be sure to have thick insulated socks. Sometimes I have found when it is really cold that wearing two pairs of socks with a layer of saran wrap between them helps to keep my feet warm.

Now, when you begin to work take it slow. It is crucial that you not push yourself hard since your body is already stressed from the cold. Take the time to warm up and do some stretching as well. Pulled muscles and ligaments and back injuries are far more common in the winter due to the muscles and supporting tissues being stiff from the cold.
Dont let yourself become a statistic, take time to stretch and warm up properly and monitor your heart. If your heart is beating rapidly, you are overworking and you need to take a break and slow down.

The Superior Mind — Man vs. Mouse

November 27th, 2011

Ive never thought of myself as a brave man, but its nice to know if youll be able to handle yourself in a dangerous situation. One morning on my drive to work such an occasion occurred. I was cruising down the road and singing off-key to the radio when I suddenly had the gut wrenching feeling that I wasnt alone. I could sense the presence of evil even before I saw the black, beady eyes and the long, fang-like teeth that would have chilled the blood of a navy seal.

I swerved the car like a madman, not caring about my own well-being or the safety of others as I tried to disgorge from my car this demonic creature from the depths of hell. But the brute held on! Clinging to my wiper blades like a trapeze artist was a mouse. And Im not talking Mickey Mouse here, this mouse was mean, evil and cunning. I could see it in his eyes.

Once Id gotten over my initial panic I knew I had nothing to fear. I had the superior mind. Besides, he was on the outside while I was safe, entombed within a metal fortress. I locked the doors and prepared to do battle.

If I couldnt shake him off, perhaps I could flood him out. My fingers wrapped around the control to the window washer and I chuckled softly to myself, knowing that this mouse had met his match. I plunged the button down and water cascaded over him in a furious waterfall while I laughed the laugh of the victorious.

But then the creature lifted first one leg and then the other, and I swear he slowly washed under each armpit. Then, with a final twist of his tail, which I knew in rodent language had to be an obscene gesture, he slithered under the hood and out of sight.

My morning at work passed slowly as I waited for lunch to arrive so I could continue my bout with the creature. Armed with an ice scrapper and an umbrella, I popped the hood and prepared to do battle. The cowardly beast had fled. In his haste he had left behind a scattering of acorn shells, leaves and pine needles. I took great pleasure in brushing his meager possessions off of my engine and onto the cold, dark pavement. This rodent hotel was closed. We both knew who had the superior mind – until I got home that night and cast a final glance at the battlefield, that space between the hood and windshield where the wipers come to rest. There, staring up at me with demonic lust, were those black, beady eyes.

We both knew he was looking for a fight. For him, it would be revenge; for me, vindication. Showing absolutely no concern for my own safety, I grabbed my weapons of choice, my trusty ice scrapper and umbrella, threw open the hood and prepared to confront the monstrous beast.

Oh, how that ninja mouse led me on a merry chase! Jumping and scrambling from engine part to engine part, the cowardly fiend was afraid to stand still and fight me like a man. Meanwhile, I followed always a second behind, banging from air filter to carburetor, my weapons a blur of angry motion. I worked myself up into a frenzy and couldnt have banged any faster had I been playing a drum solo in a rock concert. In desperation, the beast dove down a small crevice and disappeared into the bowels of my car.

A lesser man might have gloated over his victory, but I had a more important task before me. In a total disregard for the Geneva Conventions ban on chemical warfare, I forced mothballs into every crack and opening I could find. I crammed five pieces down the crevice into which the coward had fled.

Its been two days now and there has been no further sign of the evil beast. He has met his match and instinct has taken him to haunt a new location. I was free of the rodent, the only reminder the pungent smell of mothballs every time I turn on the heater. I didnt mind, it was the smell of victory.

This morning the little boy who lives next door came by to visit. He was sad. It seems that a couple of days ago his pet gerbil got loose and ran away.

The Benefits When You Quit Smoking

November 26th, 2011

If youre a smoker, we know that its very difficult to convince yourself of the need to quit smoking. But we assure you, there are just so many reasons why you have to quit smoking. So before we proceed with helpful tips to quit smoking, lets enumerate the benefits that youll enjoy once you quit smoking.

Why dont we concentrate on the lighter side first? People who smoke tend to have bad breath and yellow teeth. Once you quit smoking however, youll never have to restrain yourself with a slight smile one that doesnt show your teeth to your disadvantage, that is. And you dont have to worry anymore if youre going to turn your date off with your wonderfully stale breath!

The second advantage that youll enjoy once you quit smoking is that most people would tend to have a better impression of you. Nowadays, only a few people are untouched by nicotine addiction and if youre not into smoking, people would tend to think that youre a disciplined and reliable person.

But those are just the lighter side of things. Lets concentrate next on the cold hard facts. Once you quit smoking, changes could start happening in your life in just twenty minutes.

In less than half an hour, your heartbeat immediately drops and by the way thats a good thing because when you smoke, your heart rate is higher than normal. In half a day, the carbon monoxide level in your body goes back to normal as well. In two to twelve weeks, youll enjoy even more health-related benefits such as improved circulation and increased lung function. In nine months at most, youll be in possession of cleaner and better lungs and the tendency to cough will greatly decrease. Lastly, youll also feel that youre not as short of breath as you used to be.

One year after your decision to quit smoking, your excess risk of having a heart coronary disease is already 50% less of a smokers.

In as early as five years after your decision to quit smoking, the chances that youll have a stroke is already equal to that of a non-smoker!

In as early as a decade, the probability that youll die of lung cancer which is the fate of most people who dont want to quit smoking is half of a continuing smoker already! And in fifteen years time, the likelihood that youll experience heart coronary disease one of the most serious risks that all chain smokers face is that of a non-smokers!

Where Now For European Political Parties?

November 26th, 2011

Political parties perform important roles in European societies. Parties are institutions in which citizens with similar political views organise, develop political programmes and actively participate in the political process. They are vital for democracy because parties offer the most clear-cut political choices that are put to the electorate. Parties are also recruitment organisations, through which parliamentarians and members of government are sourced. Even though the latter functions are important, the general effectiveness of parties is closely linked to the first characteristic: their societal embeddedness – the main channel between a party and citizens. And in this respect, political parties have been declining dramatically.

The demise of political parties is not a new phenomenon. Since at least the 1980s, parties in all established European democracies have suffered massive membership losses to the point where they only retain a very limited capacity to engage citizens. The societal anchor of political parties is seriously threatened. Vernon Bogdanor wrote in 2006 that ‘the story of the rise and fall of the mass political party is one of the great unwritten books of our time’. So why do I pick this rather old problem up again in 2009? Not because I want to write the obituary of the mass political party but because we can now see where the development of political parties might lead us. This potential new future became apparent during the US Presidential campaign.

Additionally to his remarkable personal qualities, Barack Obama – during the Democratic primaries, the Presidential campaign and now even as sitting President – has been extremely successful in using new communication technologies to connect directly with citizens. Through the use of social networking tools, online video messaging and almost real time updates on what was happening on the campaign trail – and by making many of these tools available to his supporters too – he was able to create a community that was not only prepared to vote for him but willing to organise and campaign on the local level. He was able to create a political movement he can now build upon.

The construction of this movement was above all possible because new communication techniques offered a way of being actively involved in the campaign for change. But if you look behind the technical tools you notice that Barack Obama’s campaign was able to recreate old – rather than create new – characteristics that traditional European parties, especially left-of-centre parties, have lost over the years: a sense of community and belonging.

Let us take the oldest social democratic party in the world as an example: the German SPD. When the party was founded in 1863, its backbone was educational leagues founded to educate workers. The cultural and community aspect was therefore not just a by-product but very much the founding principle of the party. Being a social democrat was not a question of membership in an organisation but rather a way of life. The identity of the party was reinforced by the large variety of social democratic newspapers and publications that contributed to this distinct culture. The cultural underpinnings of political parties were also evident elsewhere and it seems that it has been especially this attribute, that used to provide the closest link to society, that has declined most dramatically in recent decades.

It was argued that because of social and ideological changes in societies in the second half of the twentieth century, mass parties – rather homogenous constructs – developed into catch-all parties that attempted to integrate the diversifying political views and social backgrounds of citizens under the umbrella of the same party. Today, many parties look like what political scientists call ‘professional-electoral parties’. Such parties are organisations that have a highly centralised leadership and are focussed on winning votes and offices. They have largely abandoned the cultural heritage of traditional political parties. ‘Professional-electoral party’ is also the closest typology for US political parties, which are practically committees to fight elections without much activity between ballots. They are very candidate centred and lack organisational leadership.

So what is new that could show the way political parties could go from here? What has changed during the Obama campaign? In a nutshell, Barack Obama has managed to recreate the community aspects of old mass parties and integrate them into a professional-electoral party. In the contemporary context, however, culture does not mean a certain way of living but rather being part of a community based on a charismatic political leader, new political ideas and a desire for grassroots activism. The creation of this new culture in the Obama campaign has only been possible by the use of new media. So after it has transformed the economy and the way we communicate with each other, is the information, communication and technology (ICT) revolution now fundamentally changing the political process too? I think there are strong arguments in favour of this and Barack Obama’s success is evidence.

What does this mean for European parties? The socio-economic circumstances and ideological believes of citizens have indeed changed dramatically since the foundation of early European parties, political activism has however not disappeared. The success of single-issue movements such as Greenpeace, Amnesty International and the Globalisation critics of Attac clearly shows the enduring desire for political activism. Some of these movements have even grown into political parties in their own right, for instance the German Greens or – with a rather different political agenda – the UK Independence Party (UKIP).

So the first ingredient – desire for political activism – is still there. But how can it be used? European parties have tried for decades to open their structures to social movements and to use societal activism for their party purposes. They have all been largely unsuccessful so far because their strategies were unclear and their own structures often too rigid. Waking up to the potential of new technologies and the experience of the Obama campaign however makes it a necessity to try again – and to try harder. After all, the only alternative seems to be further decline. Initial steps to use new technologies have been taken but more needs to be done. Europe in general is clearly behind the US in terms of internet integration in everyday life including politics. But this can also be an opportunity for the party that comes up first with a successful mix of technologies for the European context.

The second ingredient is political ideas that can capture and motivate people. The current economic crisis has opened a window of opportunity for a new politics. There is a vacuum of ideas since the promise of prosperity facilitated by unfettered markets collapsed with the international banking sector. This void has not been filled yet. In Barack Obama’s case the simple promise for change was enough to create his movement. This was however only possible in the narrow window of opportunity at the beginning of the economic crisis and in the specific context of US politics. If his movement is to become sustainable he needs to bring in new positive ideas. President Obama has understood this and has kept the close link to his followers even after assuming office. The way in which he encouraged living room discussions about his economic stimulus package across the US was a remarkable move and combined the desire for activism with political content. The sense of belonging and potential for activism created by a ‘I received an email from the President’ moment should not be underestimated.

The last ingredient in the mix is charismatic leadership. Early attempts of online campaigning in Europe have shown that it is very difficult to build mass participation in a political online campaign if there is not an appealing political figure at the top. Parties as such seem to be rather inappropriate vehicles for such campaigns. Identification becomes much easier if people are involved. So if the European political culture develops in the direction set out in the United States, it is likely that politics becomes more personalised and centred around political ideas represented by certain politicians.

Political parties have been declining for decades without finding a way to stop their downfall. The ICT revolution is here to stay and has already transformed many areas of our lives. The Obama campaign in the US has broken new ground and is certainly an important example to watch. But the question is how these developments can be worked into European party politics. A simple ‘copy and paste’ will not work. But the revitalisation of political culture and activism using new technologies is the most promising opportunity on offer to change the fate of political parties. Given the alternative, it is certainly worth trying.

Calm Your Mind And Spirit Through A Spiritual Retreat

November 26th, 2011

A lot of the busy people nowadays are actually really prone to undergoing all sorts of stress related activities from high tailing it from one meeting to another or giving a presentation or a report that took weeks before it could be finished. Such stressful activities can really be jarring on the nerves which is why a lot of people become cranky and would not care less about how they associate with other people anymore.

1. Regain Self

When this happens and that person has already lost contact with his or her spiritual self as well as a good relationship with God, then it is really time to file for a vacation leave for your self and join a spiritual retreat wherein you will be able to calm your nerves and senses so that you will be able to go back and think about the really important things in life. Acknowledging people’s importance in your life and how you greatly appreciate their constant presence in your life will really be able to help you have a successful spiritual retreat.

2. Cater To Your Needs

When it comes to joining a spiritual retreat, you must consider the following things when trying to pick out from the various spiritual retreat venues the ones that will really be able to cater to your spiritual needs as well as will be able to foster your spiritual well being. There really are a lot of spiritual retreat venues that are available nowadays for people who would just like to get away from it all and what is great about it is that you need not worry about being bored to your wits in these spiritual retreats since the organizers of these spiritual retreats have already made it possible that you will actually have a good time in their spiritual retreat programs.

- Talking about your feelings
- Your anger
- The world
- Your frustrations
- Your hopes
- Rekindle your relationship with God

3. Aims And Goals

A spiritual retreat aims to answer all these doubts and reassure you that God is certainly with us, always guiding and protecting us from harm. Like if your car has been bumped by another car and it has left a deep dent on the back, you can be rest assured that God is still protecting you since at least you were saved from any bodily harm and that your car is just a material possession that if you really work hard on it, you can actually still have it fixed or you can just buy a better model. A really enables you to become more objective when it comes to dealing with certain situations and to not get easily angry with others as well as with God.

4. Relaxation In Paradise

Still, there are those who go on to spiritual retreats hoping that they will be able to just have the time to reflect on the things that they have done and let go of all regrets – the chances that they did not took as well all the wrong things that they have done. Because as the clich goes, it’s all in the past. While a spiritual retreat is really meant for looking back on your past in order to be able to have a better looking future with your newfound faith in God as well as in yourself. It is highly important that you should also be to finally let go of the things that have been bothering you in the past therefore not enabling you to live your life accordingly to God’s will.

California DMV : Doesn’t Have To Be A Nightmare

November 26th, 2011

Going to the California DMV has long been known as a horrible, boring, dull, patience-testing yet necessary ordeal that has left people confused, angry, fed-up and above all feeling cheated out of their precious free-time. Thankfully the modern electronic era that we now conveniently reside in has given us some options apart from standing in the horrendous and droning lines associated with the California DMV.

From now on when we need to update our drivers licenses and state IDs many Californians are finding that there is an easier and much more pleasant process to completing these mundane tasks than by going to the Los Angeles DMV. For example many government agencies now offer the same services as the brick and mortar establishments at their online counterparts. By accessing services online, you can save time, money, harassment, embarrassment and energy by avoiding driving all the way downtown to wait in lines for hours and hours and hours.

We have all had the experience of trying to get our California drivers license renewed or our state ID Card updated and have had to make that harrowing trip to the California DMV and wait in line for hour upon hour surrounded by what seems to be the most intimidating of Los Angeles county citizens. Why is it that Brad Pitt or Angelina Jolie never happen to be at the LA DMV on the same day that you are. Thats because they have figured out that many of the services offered at the physical location are also available from the connivence, security, privacy and safety of your own home or office or home office.

We all have the need to be more efficient in our ever increasingly busy modern lifestyles. By combining tasks and completing as many of them from one physical location at a time we save time, money, energy, gas(which with rising fuel costs we all need to conserve) and peace of mind. Why hop in your car, drive to the california dmv, wait in line for hours, get back in your car drive to the grocery store to get this weeks food, drive across town to pick up a present for Sallys high school graduation and then back to the California DMV because you left your wallet there when you can just sit back at home and take care of everything with just a click of your mouse.

Seriously, we are living in dangerous and uncertain times these days and even a trip to the Barstow or Fresno DMV http://www.dixondailynews.com/category/automotive-guides could turn into a potentially disastrous outing. It behooves us all to avoid crowded government buildings and by completing your civil service errands from the comfort of your own home just makes good sense.

If you just cant face that notorious Los Angeles traffic or you just cant find the time to wait in line for six hours or you would rather spend that six hours spending time with your family and not at the California DMV, pay a visit to the DMV web site and see if you can take care of those mindless tasks at home or the office. You will be happy you did.
