Overcoming Barriers To Pain Relief

December 31st, 2011

Calling the under-treatment of pain in America a “human, healthcare, and economic crisis,” the American Pain Foundation wants to raise public awareness about pain relief.

More than 75 million Americans suffer from acute or chronic pain every year. Acute pain can be caused by surgery, injury or infection and usually goes away when the underlying problem is treated. Chronic pain may also result from an injury, as well as a long-term disease or condition that is more difficult for health care professionals to either diagnose or treat. More than two out of five pain sufferers experience such severe pain that they are unable to work, and almost two-thirds are unable to perform the basic activities of daily living. In fact, chronic pain costs Americans over $100 billion a year in medical expenses, lost wages and lost productivity.

Beyond dollars and cents, pain can take a heavy toll on those who suffer and their family and friends. Left untreated, chronic pain has the potential to rob a person’s quality of life-affecting their physical, psychological, social and spiritual sense of well-being. Pain can be a sign of illness and provide a useful tool for doctors to measure and monitor a patient’s health. That is why it’s important to talk to your health care provider about your pain and the most appropriate pain treatments based on your unique needs and health profile.

“The real tragedy,” says American Pain Foundation director Will Rowe, “is that try as they may, many people do not find relief, even when effective treatments exist.”

The reasons for the undertreatment of pain come from multiple fronts. They include health care providers’ lack of proper education or inappropriate attitudes; patient and family fears and misconceptions; lack of responsiveness in the health care system; and inadequate insurance coverage or availability of medication in certain pharmacies. There are also barriers to pain relief in the drug regulation system, where misguided efforts to fight drug abuse sometimes result in policies that impede medical treatments and stimulate fear of investigation among health care professionals.

Despite these barriers to getting pain relief, the American Pain Foundation wants people to know that their pain is real, that they have a right to have their pain taken seriously, and the right to be treated with dignity and respect by their health care providers.

Tips on Choosing the Right Sunglasses

December 31st, 2011

Today, sunglasses have become everyone’s bestfriend. We never leave home without them. We carry them just about anywhere our lives take us. We never miss out on every opportunity to sneak at the shades counter whenever we get the chance. Sunglasses are fast becoming indispensable. They don’t just keep out those dangerous UV rays but they also exude a lot of attitude. They’re our eyes on the world, especially the fashion world. The world ultimately looks better and hipper through the lenses. But with all the variety of trends coming on the scene, how do we pick the right shades? How do we know they fit our facial profile?

Here’s a list of quick tips for sunglasses picks to match your face:

Square Face

You need slightly curved frames with the top high enough on the face to downplay the jaw line. Try aviator or wrap styles that suit your moods.

Round Face

Straight or angular frames in a deep color such as black or tortoise flatter the features of your face. For a good fit, try square-framed sunglasses with colored lenses.

Triangular Face

Defined by a broad forehead and a narrow mouth and chin, your face can be complemented with thin rims and vertical lines. Sleek oval frames with colored lenses also looks becoming on you.

Oblong Face

Similar to the square face with a little more length, the shape of your face looks best with a frame that covers as much of the center of the face as possible. Avoid large frames, heavy nose bridges, bold colors and square shapes. Experiment on updated classics for a trendy look.

Oval Face

With an oval shape, you can choose more shapes than any other. However, always remember to pick frames in proportion to the size of your face.

Aside from finding the perfect frame for your face, you should also consider frames that are proportional to your nose. Oversize frames balance out a large nose, while short noses should find sunglasses with a high bridge and a light color. Long noses are complemented by a double bridge and frames with high sidebars, drawing attention toward temples.

A good rule of thumb: Go for the frame that is opposite from the shape of your face. Think of the word “balance” and make sure to play around with many different shaped frames before you decide on your final choice.

Challenges in Introducing Value Education at Higher Education in India

December 31st, 2011

Value Education is the much debated and discussed subject in the plethora of education in India. Of course it is true that the main purpose of any education will go with Value orientation. More concentration on Value education has been given at the primary and secondary level of school education than in higher education in India. Values could be effectively imparted to the young minds rather than to the matured ones. It may be the important reason for this prime importance given at the school level. There are so many modules designed with the help of agencies like NCERT and others for effectively imparting the value education to the school students. In this context, many innovative educational practices are being identified by the experts. Good number of experiments and studies are being conducted in the recent days on the effectiveness of teaching value education at school level. Some schools have very innovative and radical course designs to impart the values.

Effective teaching practices in imparting value education ranges from story telling, exhibitions, skits, one act play and group discussions to various other formats. New methods have been evolved by educationists to create an effective learning sphere. The usage of electronic gadgets also gains importance in the teaching-learning practices of value education. But at the higher education level, due to various reasons, the importance given to value education is not as much as it is given at the school level. The curriculum and the teaching methods also could be subjected to scrutiny. It is true that colleges are meant for a kind of specialization in some field of education. But in the Indian social context, the youth require direction and counseling at this stage. They have been exposed to various challenges at this stage which demands the intervention of educationists for his/her betterment. His/her character building also strengthens at this juncture. Students’ perception on various life factors and events are getting shaped at this stage. On the whole they evolve their own philosophy of life. Their sensitivity and knowledge are getting direction at this stage. Hence, an effective value orientation becomes inevitable to the students of colleges. Keeping this requirement in mind, States like Tamilnadu introduced a compulsory paper/course on value education to undergraduate students of all colleges in the State under the choice based credit system. Though this kind of effort is made with the good intention of imparting values to the youth, many limitations in bringing out the expected outcome could be identified.

The problem mainly begins with the definition of values. Defining the term ‘value’ poses a challenge to all scholars. The term value is loaded with varieties of meaning. Each meaning reflects its own philosophical position. Generally the term value is spontaneously associated with religious values. It is believed by many Indians that values are nothing but the religious and spiritual guiding principles of life. Hence, it is supposed that the path is already been laid for the life journey. But in the context of modernity and modernism there rises a fundamental question of whether value education is required at all in a modern state. There are those who argue that modern life is based on science and technology, and both are value neutral. They view that the values are bugbear held out by people living in the past, glued to outdated religious principles that have no relevance to the 21st century. At this point, there is also another group of modernist who propagate the necessity of value education at learning centres in order to safe guard the democratic state and its values. The values they wish to cultivate are modern secular values such as honesty, respect to other, equality, collectivity, democracy, respecting the human rights, sharing equal space in the public sphere and so on. These values are considered as the products of enlightenment period. Hence, four positions could be arrived at on the basis of the above understanding. The are:

1. There are religious values which are very much essential for every one and must be included in the curriculum.

2. The religious values should not find place in the educational system. They may operate at the private sphere.

3. There are non-religious secular values and they must find space in the education.

4. There is no need for teaching value education in the academics because they cannot be cultivated through formal learning and such value cultivation will make the individual biased.

In consequence to these positions, following questions arouse.

1. Whether value education should find place in the educational system?

2. If it is required, then what sort of values should be given preference in the curriculum?

3. What is the importance to be given to the religious values which are primarily developed on the basis of scriptures?

4. Can modern values alone are sufficient enough or is there any possibility of blending the values of modernity with religious values?

5. If religious values are to be given importance in the curriculum, which religion will find prime place? If there are contradictory propagation on a single virtue by two religions, then how are they to be handled?

6. Similarly religions differ on the practices also. Right from eating patterns, dress mode, marriage systems, war tactics, killing, punishments to various other aspects, religions differ on their outlook. In this situation, what sort of perceptions need to be taught?

Besides these questions, another billion dollar question would be raised on the methodology of effectively imparting those values. Then again as it is mentioned earlier, the school education can very well include this education easily because the system itself is advantageous for it to accommodate. But at the college level, the system finds it very difficult to work out. So this study could analyse the theoretical problems relating to the identification of values to be included in the curriculum at the one side and the problem of effective designing of the curriculum and imparting those values on the other side.

II

The necessity for imparting values to the students of all levels has been felt by everyone. The world today is facing unprecedented socio-political and economic challenges. Problems of life are becoming increasingly intense and complex. Traditional values are decentered. ‘An environment of strife pervades all countries and broken homes have become common. An insatiable hunger for money and power, leads most of people to tension and absence of peace of mind and all kinds of physical and mental ailments have become common place” 1. In the present day context of frequent and often violent social upheavals, we have to look at the problem of restlessness of the youth, their frustration born out of futility of their search for meaning of life and the purpose for which they are living, often leading to evil and wickedness. This calls for a new approach to, and a new vision of education. It is obviously felt that the present educational system promotes rat race and keep the student community in a sense of insecurity. Educational institutions have become the pressure cookers building pressures in the minds of youth. Also a loft sided educational pattern which insists on instrumental and technical rationality for the successful life in terms of gaining money and power has invaded the educational system of India. The person who is deemed to be unfit for this survival race becomes disqualified and ineligible to live in this market economy based life. The spate of industrialization and economic growth in developed nations has brought about a perceptible change in this scenario. And developing countries including India are feeling the ripple effects of this development. Values earlier considered essential by all societies have been eroded and have given way to unethical practices around the globe. Where honesty and integrity were loved and appreciated, greed, corruption and red tapism have come in, bringing in their wake, unethical responses which have pervaded all walks of life and are thwarting efforts of a few enlightened individuals to promote value based society.2 Hence, implementation of well structured education is the only solution available with all states. With growing divisive forces, narrow parochialism, separatist tendencies on the one hand and considerable fall in moral, social, ethical and national values both in personal and public life on the other, the need for promoting effective programmes of value orientation in education has assumed great urgency. Development of human values through education is now routinely seen as a task of national importance. Value education though supposes to be the part and parcel of the regular education, due to the market influences, it could not be so. Hence, it has become an inevitable need to include an exclusive curriculum for value education at all levels.

Now the next question would be about the nature of value education. What sort of values should be given preference in the curriculum is the prime problem in the introduction of value education. This problem surfaces because we can find varieties of values prescribed on the basis of various scriptures and theories. Sometimes they are contradictory to each other. This issue has been thoroughly discussed earlier. But the solution to the problem of the nature of value education is primarily dependent on the social conditions that prevail in the state. There need not be an imported value educational pattern to be prescribed in India. The burning social issues would demand the required value education. Though India is considered to be the land of divinity and wisdom, the modern value system throws challenges to the ancient value pattern. Right from the Gurkula pattern to the varna ashrama values, all values are under scrutiny by modern rationality. Hence, the relevance of the golden values prescribed by the then society is questionable in the present situation. On the other hand, the so called modern values which have been listed earlier also subjected to criticism by philosophers like post modernists. They question the very nature of the rationality of the enlightenment period. Because critics of modernity strongly declare that the modern rationality is the reason for the deterioration of human concern in the world and they paved the way for inhuman killing and escalation of values. The reason of the modernism is considered as the root of power politics which leads to inhuman behaviour of the power system, according to them. Hence the modern values like democracy, civil rights, environmental ethics, professional ethics, discipline and all such values are found useless in bringing harmony in the society. The values like discipline, tolerance, peace bears the negative connotation in this context. Hence, what sort of modern values are to be included in the curriculum is a challenge thrown towards the educationists. At one side the fanatic and fundamentalist features of religious values and on the other side the modern values based on the market economy and other factors are to be excluded and a well balanced curriculum with genuine worthy values suitable to the society has to be identified and included in the educational system. In this context, it becomes obvious that there cannot be any universal pattern of values to be prescribed in the system. When a suitable blend of religious and modern values is to be done, the designing of such course demands an unbiased, scrupulous, intelligent approach on the part of the academician who designs such course. Thus the spiritual values of sensitizing the youth for happy world and rational values for a just world are very much required. Religious values can be taken but not with the label of any particular religion, democratic values are to be included but not with its dogmatic inhuman approach. Thus there need a perfect blend of both. This is the real challenge thrown to the Indian academicians.

After the identification of these values, they need to be inculcated not to be informed to the students. Mostly listing the values is done very easily, but imparting them effectively requires genuine spirit and innovative educational practices. In the Vedic period, the gurukula system prevailed in which the student has to thoroughly undergo a pattern life with the guru shishya hierarchy. Whatever the guru declares are the values of life. But in the modern context, which is supposed to be the democratic sphere, a sense of equality and freedom has to prevail the learning situation. Also the values identified cannot be preached on the basis of the religious faiths. So the teacher has to find effective working module to internalize the values in the minds of the youth. The teachers’ understanding about the values prescribed and his/her commitment in imparting them also play a crucial role here. How to sensitize the teacher before carrying the values to the students is also a challenge to the educationists. The value education class room, if it is dealt with full seriousness and sincerity would be very interesting and challenging sphere for students and teachers. At times they need to sail at the same level with the students. The hierarchy may get disappeared. Value education demands a total responsibility from the teachers. They become more accountable. On the other side, a teacher who is committed to a set of values would always like to preach and impose them on the young minds. That extreme should also to be avoided with a balance of mind. Value education cannot be done by just delivering lectures and screening films. It requires a strong interaction between the students and the society. A lot could be experimented at this sphere. For which the supreme value ‘integrity’ is expected from the educator.

It is observed that many modules of teaching values have been designed and tested. Some are seemed to be very effective. In Tamilnadu, especially in aided colleges, with all good intention the government has introduced the value education as a compulsory scheme at the undergraduate level. But each university has its own syllabus for the same. The scrutiny of those syllabi also reveals a lot of variations in conceiving the value education. In some universities, some religion based institutions are given the responsibility of designing and even carrying out the course. Similarly the teachers who have not been exposed to any such type of training in value education are given the responsibility of teaching values. The introduction of value education for all under graduate courses is done at the cost of a core paper of that course. The teachers who have been handling their hardcore subject papers had to meet the shortage of workload due to this programme and to solve this problem, they have been entrusted with the job of teaching value education paper. This is done with the aim of avoiding the workload problem of existing teachers. The most valuable and sensitive part of education has been made like a mechanical dogmatic part. At this juncture, the fate of value education at the college level could be imagined. How to solve this issue is again a challenge to the educationists of Tamilnadu. The same fate could be observed in many other states of India. Hence, two important problems surfaces here, one at the syllabus level and the other at the teaching level. As it is discussed earlier the syllabus could be designed by way of paying attention to all aspects but imparting the same requires not only innovative teaching methods, but also innovative training method of the educators. It is as good as training the driver to drive the car; the teacher needs to be trained in imparting the values. The technical education employs teachers with sound knowledge in the subject, similarly it is essential to have teachers with sound mind and creative teaching skill to teach value education. Value education is definitely not to be dealt with compartmentalization but it should be taken as a part of the whole educational system. As Nietzsche puts it, the society requires masters to create and impart values, not the slaves who accept all the values imposed on them without any critical understanding.

If education fails to impart necessary values to its citizens, it will definitely have a telling effect on the society. All efforts to bring just and peace in the world will become futile if proper value education is not imparted.

Internet Business Ideas

December 31st, 2011

These are a few new internet business ideas that I won’t be trying, but I hope that someone will. The first comes from people’s frustration with technologies like e-book formatters. They don’t want to spend hundreds for the software, and even when they do, they have trouble learning to use it.

The solution? A service business that compiles e-books for people. You could even have customers e-mail a photo and story about each family member or friend, and make a photo scrapbook for them. Whatever the purpose of the book, the idea is that the customer can easily download the book when done.

You would also host it on your site for a year or more, with the download link on a page that only the customer knows the address of. They can direct people to the page to give the book away, sell it, or otherwise distribute it to whomever they please. A larger contract might be doing the first high school yearbook in an e-book format (probably already done by the time you read this).

New Internet Search Engine Ideas

You may know that Google and other search engines give preference to sites that are older. It’s a part of their search algorithms, and probably a good idea. It does mean, though, that even the best site in the world on a given topic may be nearly impossible to find. This can also happen because the site has too few incoming links (another part of the algorithms).

A solution is a search engine that gives highest priority to new web sites. It might even drop sites from the results once they are six months old, or perhaps always display those older sites on the bottom half of the page. The top results would always be the most relevant sites that are also the newest. This isn’t meant to be better than existing search engines, but to serve a niche they don’t serve.

Why is this a workable internet business idea? Partly because it would be so different from other search engines would attract attention and usage. Perhaps more importantly, many people would love to check regularly to see what new sites are out there covering “dogs,” “backpacking,” money making,” “baby names,” or whatever. Also, new site owners, waiting to show up in Google, would be regular visitors, searching for their own sites.

Another search engine I would like to see is one just for shopping. Imagine searching for “leather coat,” and instead of getting sites that happen to use the words and others that know how to optimize, you got 80-word descriptions of various leather jackets, always with the price and other important information. If done well, only fishing poles would be in the results when you typed in “I want to buy a fishing pole.”

It could be a paid-inclusion search engine. The user just wants to buy something, without the usual information sites in the results or “Buy leather on Ebay!” advertisements. Results could be randomly presented to start, with the ones getting clicks rising to the top of the results. This would be a democratic placement similar to Google’s ads, but with enough information to make it more meaningful than five to ten-word sales pitches.

Can these new ideas work? Only time will tell, but I hope someone tries. In the meantime, I will continue writing articles like this to bring traffic to my sites. It has been the most profitable of the internet business ideas I have tried.

Two Mindfulness Exercises

December 30th, 2011

Mindfulness exercises let you “tune in” to yourself. Distractions are let go, and your brain power is increased. The exercises help you think more clearly and concentrate better. The best news is that they are easier than you might think to learn.

Easy Mindfulness Exercises

Anytime you are stressed, stop, and carefully watch yourself to identify what’s bothering you. You may be expecting something bad to happen, or perhaps there is an argument going on just below the surface of your consciousness, or you’re worried about something, or in pain in some way. Notice everything you can.

This self-observation is crucial. It will get easier as you do it more. You’ll start to realize just how many things are going on in your own head, distracting you.

Now deal with these mind-irritants. Make the phone call that’s on your mind, take an aspirin, apologise to whomever you were fighting with. You can write things on tomorrow’s to-do list, to get them off your mind. And if there’s nothing you can do right now, tell yourself that. When you do this exercise, you’ll feel less stressed, and more able to concentrate on the tasks at hand. You can have more brain power today.

A Better Mindfulness Exercise

Sit down, relax and breath deeply through your nose. Let your eyes close and be aware of your breath going in and out. Move your attention to your body, one part at a time, noting sensations of cold, hot, tight, sore and anything else you identify. After a few minutes, start listening to sounds in the room, without thinking about them. Just listen, while still maintaining an awareness of your body and your breath.

In ten minutes or so, or when it feels right, open your eyes and look around as if you are seeing for the first time. Let your eyes rest on an object for half a minute, examining it without talking about it in your mind. Then move to another object, and another, while still maintaining an awareness of your body, your breathing, and any sounds. Just stay in this state of mindfulness for a few minutes, until you are ready to get up.

When you are aware of your body, breath and immediate enviroment, you are more fully “in the moment.” Your mind is in a receptive state, with fewer mental distractions that can prevent clear thinking. An exercise like this before important mental tasks will give you greater brain power, specifically more focus and concentration. Today is a good day to learn something new. Why not try one of these mindfulness exercises?

Boxing Notebook: Corrales-Castillo III Should Be Mucho Macho!

December 30th, 2011

Code Red! Code Red!

Saturday is the final clash between Diego Chico Corrales (40-3, 33 KOs) and Jose Luis Castillo (54-7-1, 47 KOs) for the lightweight championship of the world. Though 70 pounds south, theyre true heavyweights. Sportsbook odds are Castillo -220, Corrales +180 – based on what?

Tale of the tape: Corrales, 28, is a lightweight freak, 5-11 with a half-inch fist, forearm and thigh advantage over the 5-8, 32-year-old Castillo plus a one inch bigger expanded chest, reach, bicep and calf. Castillo needs a ladder to reach him (on paper).

Corrales has had great success against smaller, aggressive guys. Castillo is strong enough mentally and big enough physically (He demonstrated that last time with Chico) to mete out plenty of pain of his own.

But the physical discrepancies dont apply here. Chico doesnt fight tall. He likes to walk in and unload hooks and rights bang on the inside, fight short. He likes it physical.

Reviewing their first bout, I was amazed at Corrales success when he made space. When he pushed off on Castillo and attacked from the outside, he was effective dropping right hands and short hooks. He used the jab to control the pace – Castillo had no answers. So, why doesnt he stick with it? Hes like the guy.that threw himself on cactus and when asked why said: It seemed like a good idea at the time.”

Think back to Corrales-Casamayor II. Stick and move. Outbox the guy. Corrales’ trainer, Joe Goossen, should put it in letters of fire on a ringside billboard. Also, Castillo is prone to cuts. Spear him with the jab; open the scar tissue. Double-jab right over the top, keep moving. Do that all night, and Corrales gets the W. But, it isnt a safe bet.

Chin Check: Corrales is no stranger to the canvas.

Floyd Mayweather dropped him five times one night. Castillo and Joel Casamayor scored five knockdowns and one knockout against him. You can develop muscles, strengthen your mind, but you cant train a chin. Plus, Castillo has found something with that short left hook.

In a recent FHM interview, Corrales analyzed the punch:

I got a left hook in that second fight and that was purely my mistake. I caught him with my right hand, and he was ready for it. I felt him pulling himself down and really losing some steam. I need to make sure my hand is at home and never cocked.

You can read the full interview here: http://www.fhmus.com/articles-1267.asp?cnl_id=5&stn_id=46&idx_id=1267

These guys bristle with macho. Expect the first few rounds to be more controlled: Corrales moving and setting the pace. Once Castillo breaks through, its MACHO TIME. Ill agree with the sportsbook odds – if Corrales chin holds up, hell land enough punches to eke out a split decision.

Jhonny Gonzalez-Fernando Montiel: Is it over yet?
Who made this fight? Was this a Barrera concoction? Maybe law school has him out of touch. Being Guatemalan, I can relate to the poor souls who were expecting a slugfest and got a snoozefest.

Look, when you match Mexicans, you dont expect Leonard vs. Benitez. To Latinos boxing equals fighting.Hit and get hit. We dont want a ballet. After a 12-hour shift, getting a crap paycheck, my wife yelling at me and my car breaking down all I want to do Fridays is hang with the boys, suck down some Coronas and watch two guys trying to kill each other cause they’re pissed.

How about an Im sorry bout? Daniel Ponce De Leon was on the same card, and he scored another KO. Doesnt a guy with a 90 percent KO ratio deserve to be on TV?

Joe Rein describes De Leons style: “Hes a clenched fist, sparring – an impatient 5-5 southpaw he brings it! -with little give in his legs over-wide stance – and constant I-want-to-kill-you lead lefts, making his handlers cringe. But he shrinks from no exchange – head down, squared-up, furiously winging to knock down a building. None of it by design, more a random act of violence.

Many of his free swings are blocked or parried, but when his sparmate steps back, thinking hes out of range, Ponce brings new meaning to “reach out and touch someone” with a wingspan just shy of Marcianos. The shudder when he lands makes it clear why hes dangerous.

Read more about De Leon here: http://www.thesweetscience.com/boxing-article/3849/are-you-making-any-money/ . Next time a fight sucks, HBO should sneak in a bonus bout. Who cares which, as long as its brutal.

Last Round
Chad Dawson should look awesome against Eric Harding in his first light heavyweight go.Hardings not lacking confidence:

I am willing to fight for winner-takes-all, he said. Dawson has made a big mistake. This is like a man against a young kid. He better be ready. Every fight is a must-win for me.

Harding outpointed Antonio Tarver in a WBC eliminator on June 23, 2000. He also fought ex-world champs Montell Griffin and Glen Johnson. Harding, the WBC No. 10/IBF No. 9 contender won USBA and NABF 175-pound crowns in his past two starts, 12-round decisions over David Telesco and Daniel Judah.

Dawson, the WBC No. 7/WBA No. 15 contender, said, I am looking forward to this. It is a great fight for ShoBox. I am a still an improving, young fighter who is stepping up in competition. Harding is a great fighter. He has a good resume, but I definitely think I am the stronger fighter. I am in great shape. The world will know my name when I walk out of the ring with a victory.

Dawson knows how to deal with awkward fighters. I was at Dawsons bout against Ian Gardner in New Haven, Conn. with TN promoter Jake Donovan, who commented about the fight:

The first few rounds were typical of a Gardner fight, even if the southpaw wasnt in complete control. Dawson carried the action, but Gardners awkward style caused him to miss nearly everything. Action was so dismal, that many in press row were more interested in the war of words between the two camps at ringside.By round five, Dawson took over for good. Gardner offered an occasional straight left, but seemed more concerned with a shot that caught him above the bridge of his nose. By rounds end, Gardner was slow to walk back to his corner, grabbing his head, as if something was amiss.

Chad Dawson was amiss. The guys the goods.

10 seconds
WBA welterweight champion Ricky Hatton will sit ringside in Las Vegas on Saturday for Castillo-Corrales III, intending to challenge the victor of this epic trilogy, says his dad, manager Ray Hatton.

“He’d like to fight the winner, although we have heard rumors that Castillo will jump right up to welter afterwards and possibly fight Miguel Cotto.”

Im skeptical of a Cotto-Castillo bout coming off. On June 10, Paul Malignaggi has his own plans.

Fifth Wheel Buying Tips

December 30th, 2011

A fifth wheel trailer is a type of camper that is towed by a truck with a special hitch. It provides accommodations for sleeping, bathing and dining. This type of trailer is a great way to provide all the comforts of home while traveling or camping. There are standard models available that provide all the necessary facilities for living short term. There are also luxury models that are quite elegant and spacious and are perfect for people who decide to RV full time.

Fifth wheel prices can range from fairly inexpensive to very pricey depending on the size and amenities included. Smaller units can start at around $10,000.00 for a new model and provide adequate living and dining areas. Luxury models can exceed $100,000 and can be quite spacious. These are homes away from home and may include televisions, Internet capabilities, living areas, bedrooms, luxury kitchens and dining areas, and fully equipped bathrooms. The casual traveler can get away with a smaller model with no problem but people who travel often and want to travel in style often choose more luxurious accommodations so they can travel in style.

Although fifth wheels are more expensive than travel trailers, many people prefer fifth wheels because they are much easier to tow. Because a fifth wheel is hitched in the bed of your truck, there is more stability than with a travel trailer which is hooked on the back of a truck of SUV. People who have towed both travel trailers and fifth wheels say it can be difficult to pull a travel trailer, especially in windy conditions, because the trailer will sway from side-to-side. Fifth wheels will have little to no sway, making them easier to tow and less detrimental to your gas mileage.

Choose what your minimum requirements are and compare those with your budget. You may be able to get more amenities at a lower cost by purchasing a used fifth wheel. You should also consider how the fifth wheel will be towed. The type of vehicle used may determine the maximum weight allowed which will affect your decision. Shop around at local dealers and do research on the Internet for the models that will suit your needs.

Buying a fifth wheel is like buying a home or car. They are investments and care should be taken in picking the right one for your needs. Shop multiple dealers and look at several models before deciding on the one you want. Make a visual inspection first to determine if the amenities are what you want and need. Get a list of all the equipment and features included and compare all of them. Make sure it comes with a warranty to cover any maintenance and repairs that may be needed.

These vehicles depreciate quickly so purchasing used ones can be a great value. However, make sure you are getting a quality vehicle. Check the Internet for consumer reports on makes and models. Check every aspect of the fifth wheel for use, wear and damage. Many newer models that are well cared for will be ideal for your use and will not cost as much as a new one.

The important aspect about buying a fifth wheel is to take your time. Research your options. Ask friends or those you know who have purchased them. Get consumer reports on individual models to determine which ones hold up the longest and have the best resale value. Compare prices to be sure you are getting the most features for the best price.

The Simplest Ways To Make Money Online

December 29th, 2011

Many working mothers for instance are leaving their full time jobs, and taking up home business so they can spend more time with their children. This is the main reason so many mothers choose to work at home.

They want to establish some type of financial standing while still being able to watch over and spend quality time with their children. Internet home business can be a great idea for stay at home mothers, as it provides a flexible schedule as well as the benefit of making money to supplement the familys income and raising your kids at the same time.

Some examples of great ways to make money online are: owning a home business, completing surveys, selling on eBay, freelancing, selling from your own website, and reading emails. The benefits of owning an online business are immense, when done the right way, or can be very difficult if you are not dedicated. Anyone interested in making money online should carefully consider the steps necessary to do this.

Starting an online business is not difficult, but selecting the right product to sell online is key to becoming successful. One of the key decisions to making money online is choosing the right product to market. Without the right product, and your online business is already starting off on the wrong foot. Therefore, in order to make money online, it is a good idea to always select a product that is not already saturated in the market. This will require some considerable amount of research on your part.

One of the ways to determine which products have already reached their saturation level, is to look out for ads for these products, as they will be shown on almost every website. Since many other people are offering them for sale, the chances are, this product would not make money online as the supply for the product far outweighs demand. However, it is a better idea to not only research a product that appeals to a large number of people, but also such a product should only be advertised by a small amount of people. This will increase your chance of making money online.

Researching and finding such a product is the biggest obstacle facing most people who want to setup online businesses. It is a good idea to always consider your hobbies and interest, as this will put you in a better position to answer questions and queries about your products. Many online pet shops for instance started with their owners having a passion for pets.

If you are still at a loss with what you want to sell, because your interests cannot be turned into profit making products that you can sell online, it is a good idea to consider selling the products of someone else to make money online.

Affiliate programs for instance are a legitimate way to make money online as they have become very popular with time. Some of the reasons why you should consider joining an affiliate program, are because it saves you the hassle of having to research and design your own products to sell.

Many of these programs, provide affiliates with resources such as a ready-made website to help affiliates market their products. And all you will have to do is to advertise these products to make money online.

Repair Shops & Ordering Tires For Your Car

December 29th, 2011

They go with us everywhere and they give a whole new meaning to the phrase of being on the road. The tires on your car are literally on the road everywhere you go and, when it comes time to change them, nothing but the best will do. The first step to choosing tires for your car is determining the style and size of your current tires and writing it down on a piece of paper.

When choosing tires for your car, two of the most important considerations are quality and warranty. When purchasing any new type of automobile equipment or parts, such as tires, you should receive a clear warranty from the manufacturer. In order for this to remain effective, you must keep the original purchase receipt and follow any instructions as provided with the purchase of your new tires.

When it comes to selecting a repair shop to order and install the tires, you will want to make sure that they offer quality service and have a reputation to match. In an effort to ensure your satisfaction, check out the shops Better Business Bureau report. This information, which is free at BBB.com, will provide a detailed history of the repair shop and includes the length of time in business, number of complaints that have been filed within 24-36 months and how many of those were resolved satisfactorily according to the Better Business Bureau standards.

When you are ready to purchase, call your local car repair shop and inquire about availability. If the tires that you need are in stock, the technicians may be able to service your car immediately. If they have to be ordered, you will be given a cost estimate and an expected date of arrival. On this date, you should plan to be available for taking your automobile into the shop for servicing.

Before agreeing to the order, make sure that you have everything in writing. When dealing with a transaction that involves both parts and labor, you will need to have a receipt that clearly shows the cost of the both the tires and the cost of the actual labor. This will help to eliminate any future disputes over a cost quoted and will make the transaction much smoother.

And finally, when choosing tires for your car and a repair shop to install them, you will want to choose a company that stands behind their work. If a car repair shop doesnt offer any type of guarantee on their work, consider shopping around for another tire shop. As a customer, it will give you great peace of mind in knowing that your hard-earned money is well spent with a company who appreciates your business by standing behind their own.

How To Accept Credit Card Sales

December 29th, 2011

No matter how long youve been in business, you may not be sure about how to accept credit card sales from your clients. Perhaps you long to start processing credit payments so you can increase the amount of your sales revenue or offer your clients more payment transactions. Maybe youre just tired of chasing bad checks or waiting for monthly payments on client accounts. If youre ready to add credit card processing to your line of customer services, a merchant services account may be just what you need.

A merchant account associate can show you how to accept credit card sales by using the right type of processing equipment. By signing up for a merchant account, you will soon find out if youre approved, and upon approval, you can start using your account to implement a credit processing system for just about any type of business youre in. A simple credit card terminal equipped with a printer can be plugged into an outlet at your store or shop to let your customers quickly swipe credit cards for easy payments on the purchases they make. Your merchant account underwriter will charge a certain amount for each transaction, or you might be able to opt for a low percentage rate on your monthly credit payment volume. If youre in a window washing or another service business, or if you deliver items like baked goodies, you can lease or buy a wireless credit card processor to take with you in your travels for point-of-sale credit card payments.

How soon can a merchant account let you know how to accept credit card sales? The first thing to do is find a bank or another financial backer who will provide this type of account for your business. Then apply for your company account by filling out an online application or by completing and mailing a printed form. Some banks may charge an application fee of $100 or more, so find out ahead of time if you will need to pay this fee, and if so, you might want to consider shopping for another account provider. Also check into the costs associated with a particular merchant account so you can find the best deal, as these can carry several types of fees, some of which may at first appear to be hidden. When your account is approved, you can immediately get set up with the right equipment to handle credit card payments, e-checks, and debit payments as well. You may even want to consider setting up a digital processing system so your customers can dial a toll-free number, browse products online or from a print catalogue they have already received, and punch in their orders as well as a credit card number and expiration date for payment. You dont even have to hire someone to staff the phone line, although it is probably a good idea to have someone available for a few hours during a typical business day.

Ask your bank or another financial lender to tell you more about the ways in which a merchant account can show you how to accept credit card sales.

The Lost Art Of Hand Candle Crafting

December 28th, 2011

I am from Missouri. The state suprises me the more I explore her. Tonight I am staying in a hotel in Branson, Missouri. Many of you are probably familiar with the city, I am not. Evidentally I was here at the age of 5,… but to be honest, if I can remember something that happened 10 years ago, I am doing pretty good… let alone 27 years ago!

Anyway, enough rambling about my memory condition.

Many folks have visited Silver Dollar City. For those of you that don’t know, SDC is a theme park modeled after the way of life in the hills of the Ozarks. The visitor will witness many craftsmen / craftswomen, one of these are the old-tyme (purposely mispelled) chandlers.

You may see an old man with a long white beard dipping wickes in a vat of wax heated by a fire. To someone who has been making candles for several years, this was an incredible sight. Obviously to the average candle burner, not to great of a spectacle unless that casual candle user has not idea how candles are made… in large factories in China.

Seriously though,… a lot of work goes into hand made candles. Of course many candle companies are born out of a basements, garages, spare rooms, and kitchens. Back in the olde (purposely mispelled) days, convieniences were a rarity. Candle distributers where unheard of, and they definately couldn’t import candles made in foreign countries buy the container full!

The wax was heated over fire… someone manually dipped the wicks. A lot of work, compared to today’s standards, went into making a candle!

Ok… by now you are asking me to get to the point. Next time you purchase a candle or candles (soy or paraffin), do you local chandler a favor and try a truly handmade / hand-dipped candle and check out the difference. Not only the way it looks, but the way it burns, how long it burns, and how it smells. You might be suprised, and you may change your preference in candle purchasing. The subtle differences in the wax alone will amaze you!

Your local chandler puts a lot of time, effort, and love into the candles they hand make. They take pride in their product. They are forced to produce a super high quality product to stay competitive in the marketplace. Sure, they may cost a little more, but as they say in the hills of the ozarks, “Ya pay fer what ya git!”

Decompression Sickness: The Perils of Excessive Air Pressure

December 28th, 2011

Adventure, thrill, and courage — these are the things that define scuba diving. Scuba stands for Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus. This this kind of diving is the act of swimming under water with the use of self-contained breathing equipment and oxygen tanks. By carrying a source of compressed air, a scuba diver is able to stay underwater for longer periodsof time using simple breath-holding techniques. Scuba diving enables individuals to explore deeper undersea, rather than a few meters under the surface. However, this form of diving also carries with it the risks that other sporting activities possess. Recent studies show that the chance of dying while scuba diving is somewhat higher than boxing and is almost 40 times higher than playing football or water-skiing.

Problems with availability time?

December 28th, 2011

Many companies do want to interact with online customers and use their feedback, but they lack the personnel or time to do that. It is really important to have the will, anything else can be settled out. If you are one of those, read further and you might get some ideas.

Some companies place the “chat button” on their website, but rarely are available for support. Some of the others adore the concept, but are unable to organize the website support issues because the lack of time or personnel. In any case, you must carry out whatever you start doing and keep your promises to your website visitors. Inconsistency and false information can make your interactions with customers worse.

Although the solution lies in analyzing and using the most of your resources in the situation, here are some starting ideas to help you decide:

You can place an expert in the field to answer the questions of your website visitors in appointed hours. For example: If you are a website for diet products, you can put expert in nutrition available 2-3 hours per day at stated hours on the website. That would lead to increasing the amount of your website visitors, as well as your credibility and reputation.

You can state smaller interval of “availability hours” each day, by writing: “Operators are available from 12:00 until 15:00 each day. We are glad to answer any of your personal questions, requirements and doubts”.

If you sell standardized products, you can state availability hours for receiving customized orders from your customers. You can place your sales and technical staff online in appointed hours and inform your current and potential customers about the service.

Put your current employees to serve online customers while their working time interchangeably. They already know everything about your products and the company and probably don’t need additional training. For example: If you have a store, you can setup your shop assistants as receptionists on your website. They can split the support time into smaller intervals and provide support rotating.

If you already have a phone-support personnel, you can also use them to serve online visitors. They all have the knowledge and availability of new streams of information and can adapt and start almost immediately.

Depending on the situation, these solutions can become very creative. We will be glad to receive some of yours.

Why Buying And Holding Is Dangerous To Your Retirement

December 28th, 2011

Copyright 2006 Equitrend, Inc.

When someone tells you that the dam is breaking, do you just stand there and get washed away by the floodwaters? Why does the professional management industry give you that advice for managing your retirement? Why did trillions of dollars get lost in the millennium bear market due to the bad advice of passive money management?

The Latest Research

A study by three academics from the London Business School was recently reported in a great Wall Street Journal article titled “Long-Term Risk Is Underestimated,” goes a long way toward debunking the myths of long- term investing. Professors Elroy Dimson, Paul Marsh, and Mike Staunton dispelled the buy-and-hold notion by observing, “not only can markets take a long time to recover, but also investors generally underestimate what the safe long-run period is to hold stocks.”

Just how dangerous this Buy & Hold myth can be is seen in another finding of the study, which is that “out of 16 major national stock markets, investors from only five would have been guaranteed positive annual returns over every 20-year period during the past century.”

That’s pretty staggering. Most people feel it’s a slam-dunk that they’re going to win over 20 years. Of course, that presupposes they won’t fall prey to another problem, which is survivor bias. It’s quite possible that even if the market worked out over 20 years, the handful of stocks they picked might not, as most people who bought Internet stocks can now see clearly. The article also exploded one of the present-day myths. You know, the market’s been down three years in a row, and therefore it can’t decline for a fourth, as positioned by so many pundits. The professors’ response to that is: “The history of stock market performance shows that across 16 markets, the probability of a fourth down year is 40%. That also happens to be the probability of any other year being a down year.”

The Bear Ate My Retirement

The millennium bear market will go down in the history books as one of the worst bear markets to date. For those of you who are young and have time on your side, you should be able to suffer through the years it takes to get back to break-even. If you are nearer to retirement, your retirement plans have probably been altered. There are many sad stories documented about people just like you who have lost much of their retirement savings to the millennium bear market.

I can only plead with you to evaluate trend timing techniques to grow and protect your precious assets. Invest with, and not against, the market and let the mathematics of an advancing and declining market work in your favor.

Hypochondria: Fearing Something That Does Not Exist

December 28th, 2011

A phobia is a clinical term that is used to describe an irrational and persistent fear of certain objects, situations, activities, or persons. These fears are beyond one’s control and may interfere with one’s daily activities. There are many forms of phobias, and they can be a fear of something specific such as the fear of flying, or fear of social interaction. Other examples of this disorder may involve fear of small animals, closed spaces, and snakes. Medical experts estimate that at least five percent of the entire U.S. population has one or more clinically diagnosed fear disorder. A phobia usually begins at home and persists into adulthood. Some of these conditions if not treated may debilitate a person.

Will you pay $135 million for a small piece of canvas?

December 27th, 2011

Copyright 2006 Socrates Olympio

In many respects one could say that this question is almost like a misnomer on any given day. $135 million? For 99.9% of the world’s population the question may not merit a decent response if any at all. Simply because most of the worlds population are either middle-class, working class, living hand-to-mouth or are in abject poverty.

So that leaves the veritable 0.01% or less of the world that have the disposable income or wealth enough to splash out on a small piece of canvas. Now for argument’s sake, lets all assume that you and I did form part of that elite group. Will you still pay that amoount of money?

I can almost hear the questions coming through very loudly. What kind of canvas is it? Well, short answer is its an oil painting. An oil painting for 135 humungous ones? Yes and you better believe it. Not too long ago, Gustav Klimts iconic Mona Lisa of Austria that was looted by the Nazis went under the hammer for a whopping $135 million.

The entire art world was rightfully astounded by the auction price. But to you and I probably a bit on the sinful side of things. How can you justify the price of such a piece? Easily, I say. Forget the price for a moment. Lets try and place some value to it.

A little history sleuthing should help us on the way: Who was the artist? When was it painted? How many are there? Why was it painted?

Indeed even to the non-art lover, the mention of heavyweights such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Van Gogh etc., is enough to spark interest simply because the impact of their work is so ubiquitous in daily life such that no one can ignore the mastery and uniqueness of their pieces. I once saw a saying that goes ‘…if no-one ever took risks, Michaelangelo would have painted the Sistine floor!’ (Neil Simon, playwright) If you havent seen it, seek it on the web or in person at the Vatican, its simply breathtaking!

Clearly the age of a piece of artwork also impacts on our decision to splash out. Recently another bizzare auction took place in London. Dubbed the holy grail of vintage wine, a 1787 Sauternes from Chateau Yquem went under the hammer for a rather paltry $100,000! Clearly age must have something to do with how we value collectibles.

Then there’s the lingering desire for exclusivity. Does anybody else have one? Indeed how many of the same are out there? If the answers are no and one respectively, expect the price to skyrocket. Notice how your average male makes an absolute fuss about having the latest ride in town when he’s the only one with it? Well, seemingly the same trait permeates art collecting as well. Amongst the super rich and the old money, its not the type or number of ‘horses in your stable but rather which art pieces you have in your hallway! This is effectively the bling bling for the super-rich.

Finally, although to a lesser degree we seem to enjoy stories. If the painting doesnt tell a story, its rank will be on the lower end of things. Let it tell an intriguing story or better-still spice it with a myth or legend and bingo! Price shoots up again.

All in all, we can agree that there distinct factors in deciding whether and how much we pay for antiquated art pieces. But $135 million? Not me, for that kind of money I can find 135 charities at least whose operations will be transformed for a long time and boy that is a better feel-good factor than whats in my hallway.

Wholesale Clothing: Discounts For Your Business

December 27th, 2011

Ever thought of starting your own fashion business?

If you answered yes, try to buy wholesale clothing before starting your business. Buying Wholesale clothing branded or not branded, can give you great discounts and resell them with high profit margins. Buying wholesale clothing can give you many benefits as a businessman.

Businessmen who buy wholesale clothing and resell them at a bargain price can accumulate huge profits from their customers. This is because they can get their products at a very cheap price. They can get their products with discounts for as high as 70%.

With todays economy, many people opt for cheap clothing to save money for other important purposes. You can take advantage of the poor economy by selling cheap clothing. You can put up a one dollar store where all items of clothing can be sold for a dollar. This store can really give you high profits if you do it right.

This strategy is only the first. You can also sell your wholesale clothing products on the internet. You can register at an auction website where you can display your products and wait for people to bid. Just imagine, starting your clothing bid for one dollar can go as high as ten dollars. Remember, this is just for one item.

Try selling on a flea market. This is where most people buy cheap clothes. Sell your products at a cheap price. Many people like it cheap and fashionable. Besides, who wouldnt want to get great quality and fashionable clothing at a cheap price?

To be successful in the clothing business, you should first search for wholesale clothing dealers that offer great discounts for their products. If you found one, you should first take a look at their products to ensure the quality. Also, make sure that the clothes designs are what people are looking for. A great way to do this is to base your search on what you see in the streets. Determine what clothes designs people likely wear. It is also a great way to look for designs that famous personalities wear. Remember that actors or actresses are trendsetters; many people would really want to copy how their favorite actor or actresses dresses.

Remember, people are choosy on what they wear, and some people cannot afford to buy expensive branded clothes, so their next option is to buy cheap clothes that resemble what the branded clothes looks like. The designs of what you sell can determine your businesss success.

It is up to you to determine what type of clothing you should buy from wholesalers. You can either buy mens clothing, womens clothing, kids clothing or all of it for you to resell them at a much cheaper price.

However, there are many other businessmen in this business. Chances are, you have many competitors in this business that have the same idea as you. The best way to compete with them is to sell cheaper clothes. Find a wholesaler that sells clothes cheaper but has great quality and has designs that people want to buy.

Another strategy to compete with other clothing businesses is to have a promo of buy one, get one free. With wholesale clothing, this is possible. You can afford to give away one clothing for every purchase because of the cheap price of acquiring your products. Be sure that you have the numbers right before making this offer.

Make sure that you do not run out of products, it is important that the wholesaler is near your area where you sell your products.

Buying wholesale clothes is a great way to start your very own business.

Oscar Awards Celebrity Goodie Bags

December 27th, 2011

You can’t help but thumb through the fashion mags after a Hollywood award show to see what the stars wore-the good, the bad and the downright shameful. But one aspect of all the glitz is the goody bags the stars take home. Sure, it may take an entire paycheck (or two or three) to afford just one item from these hush-hush swag bags, but we still want to know what’s in them. What is so intriguing about millionaire celebrities (who could stop working today and still live more comfortably than the general populous)getting free stuff that we’d eat Ramen noodles for a month to own?

Maybe it’s because stars set the trends-and even if you’re not a closet E! News devotee, you’ll run out to buy those hot shades Paris Hilton was photographed wearing. And as much as it pains us to think about the unfairness of it all-stars hold a lot of clout when it comes to product endorsements-the very reason companies load them up with free loot. So, even if you think you’re the most stylish accountant to grace corporate America, thousands of people won’t buy leopard-print pants simply because you wore a pair to the office party.

Okay, so what’s in the bags? It could be a Gaiam’s Organic Spa Experience, complete with European-style glass aromatherapy essential oil diffuser; organic cotton towel; organic cotton robe; soy pillar candle; botanical shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, body wash and cleansing bar; meditation and Yoga CD sets; and a Maize storage chest.

Celebs at the recent Academy Awards took home a Motorola Special Edition Black RAZR V3. in a keepsake and personalized Jonathan Adler box (sorry folks, this tricked out version of the Motorola’s popular mobile is a celebrity exclusive).

How about a two-night stay for two at Bernardus Lodge in Carmel Valley, California valued at $2,500? www.bernardus.com Or a sterling silver choker/braclet/earring set made of pearls and Bali beads by Cathy Jordan?

To keep track of celebrities’ 15 minutes of fame, guests could take home a Fabio Micucci Fabio Micucci (no, not that Fabio) hour glass. And presenters at a past Oscars got a Micucci crystal decanter with a sterling silver stopper (perfect for all those celebrity offspring born with a silver spoon…oh you know what I mean)

It’s a bitter pill to swallow but we both know you’ll be breaking out the Top Ramen (and I’m right along with you).
