Benefits of Hydroponics in Agriculture

October 16th, 2011

Hydroponics is a popular method of growing plants without dirt. The plants are instead grown in a nutrient rich solution, specially formulated to provide all of the ingredients a growing plant needs to thrive. In the 18th century, it was discovered that soil acted as not much more than a container for the nutrients.

It was discovered that plants received all of their nutrients through inorganic ions contained in the moisture in the soil. The soil itself was not required and almost any plant can be grown via hydroponics.

Hydroponics creates a few benefits for plant cultivation. Firstly, the water stays in the system and can be recycled. As the level of nutrients in the water is controlled, there are no nutrients leaching away into the environment. Hydroponics is almost always conducted in a regulated environment, making it easier to control pests and diseases. More, previously unusable area, is opened up to food production, as the use of hydroponics negates the need for in-ground agriculture.

Designing Your Own Garden Pond is Not Difficult

September 1st, 2011

Garden ponds add beauty and elegance to your garden. They enhance your original garden and can even add value to your property. If you add a water feature such as a waterfall or fountain you will give your senses a treat as the sound of gently rippling water adds to your relaxation and enjoyment. Your garden will become a sanctuary and will be your very own little oasis.

Ponds need to be located in full sun for some of the day. This is especially important if you plan to keep fish and plants. The pond should be kept away from trees, as their falling leaves can be toxic to a pond. Oak, Laburnum, Yew, Poplar, Willow and Elder are especially poisonous but any leaves can alter the pond’s water chemistry drastically.

Access to a water supply is necessary, as you will need to perform water changes and top up the pond if water has evaporated in the sun. If you plan to install a water feature too then you will need an electrical source close by too. This source will also be needed to power any equipment your pond needs in order to run. You may need to fence off the pond or place a net over the top if you have small children or if you live in an area where predators prowl.

A view of your pond is also very important. You will not be able to spend all year outside so place it near a window so you can check on it from inside your house when the weather is poor. Also remember to check with your utility companies to find out if there is any underground cabling in your back yard.

Plan your garden pond design on paper and then rope this off outside using stakes to secure the shape and size. Make sure you have an adequate budget, which takes into account that things may cost more or they may be a problem. It is best to have a small contingency fund, which you may use if you need to.

Once you have chosen the location of your new garden pond you will want to begin. Usually people choose natural looking shapes for their pond and even if you have the money don’t begin work on a huge pond if your garden is only small. It will ruin your entire garden and look wrong.

If you want to keep fish then your pond must be a minimum of 3 feet deep. You will be able to choose a pond liner which is the shape you require but is flexible enough for you to move it a little in order to keep within your design.

My Husband Loves the Mini Greenhouse

August 5th, 2011

My husband is a certified green thumb person. He loves to cultivate plants and crops in our backyard. But when a storm paid a visit in our town, his beautiful backyard garden was destroyed. All his hard work was ruined. He was really devastated but then I found something at the store that might cheer him up a bit. There was a mini greenhouse kit that I found. I bought it at once and read the manual. It was an answered prayer for my husband. I gave him the kit and explained to him the manual. I told him he can start a new garden. However, this time no storm will damage his beloved plants anymore. He loved the idea having a mini greenhouse inside our house. He started to put up the greenhouse immediately. He was very thankful and I was happy of the outcome of my idea too.

Advantages of Growing Tomatoes

July 25th, 2011

You won’t be constantly tying your plant to a stake or cage as it grows ever larger and you won’t have much pruning to do since you planted a smaller variety. As an added benefit, your fruits attract beneficial insects too. As soon as your plant starts producing fruit, your harvest only involves a short travel to your patio, plucking a couple of them before walking back to the kitchen. Easy. Fresh juicy homegrown tomatoes for just less than 2 minutes!

Advantage #3 – You Avoid the Risk of Most Tomato Diseases

By using a clean potting mix at the start and with your plants roots being seperated from other plants you drastically reduce the risk of tomato diseases. This is because many tomato diseases are prompted by fungi that lurk in the soil. Just make sure that you keep your leaves dry as this helps reduce the risk of disease even further.

Busy Tree Service

June 24th, 2011

Summer time is here again and that means that tree service companies are really busy! It is time for you to get those trees pruned or removed if you need or want it done. Get your appointment in soon because you may wait a week or two before someone comes out to the house to do your work. I recently made an appointment with my local Tree Service Houston, where I live and the earliest appointment for a tree removal was 4 days. I have a tree in my yard whose roots are spreading underneath our sidewalk by the road and our driveway. The sidewalk is starting to buckle up and it is becoming a safety hazard. The driveway hasn’t started breaking apart yet, but I am sure it will happen soon. I am confident that my tree service guys will be able to get the tree and all the roots out.

Why Have Hampshire Tree Pruning

April 17th, 2011

As we all know, trees keep on growing, and this can be a cause for concern if they get too large. Large trees can block light from a garden, or affect the look of the garden by being too overbearing.

It is a good idea to undertake Hampshire tree pruning to ensure that your trees do not become overgrown and unmanageable for a longer term look with an ideal tree.

Large old trees can have branches which become old and fragile which means that they end up being dangerous to people walking underneath. This can be an accident hazard, particularly if the tree is near a major Hampshire road, so something would need to be done about it.

Having a tree felled is a rather drastic solution, so rather than cutting it down, you can use the services of a tree surgeon to have the worst branches cut down to ensure that the tree is healthy and safe.

Wooden Patio Sets Look More Natural Than Synthetic Sets

January 24th, 2011

When the spring and summer start to approach it’s time to consider getting your wooden patio set out of storage and ready for the hot weather. A wooden patio set will last you many years if cared for properly and maintained regularly so it’s important to treat your patio set with wood preservative and varnish each year so that it remains in the best condition possible. This is particularly important if your patio set is so heavy that it can’t be dismantled and stored during the winter months in a garden shed or garage. If you live in a country which has harsh winters the wind and rain will certainly take its toll on your prized wooden patio set. Wooden patio sets are available in many types of wood including oak, teak and other hardwoods and their appearance is very natural so they are inclined to blend in with the garden environment much more than patio sets made from plastic and other synthetic materials.

Shopping is Only Fun when

January 18th, 2011

Remember how I said how much I wanted to have a pond in my garden? Well, I’ve decided that shopping for all the stuff to go with it isn’t as much fun as I would’ve thought. I just want it finished! I don’t want all the hassle that goes beforehand.

There are also a lot of decisions to make. What size? What shape? How deep? What kind of fish? What plants? Where in the yard should we put it? Augh!

I finally did enough searching on the internet that I’ve decided on all of these things, but now I have the task of shopping for all of it. I think I’ll just buy everything online. So much easier, in my opinion. I just have to remember to purchase the pond pumps that go along with it. Oh, could you imagine if I bought it all but forgot the pump? Paul would be LIVID! I’ll do it now while it’s fresh in my mind.
